The 1940s began on a good note for the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Company. America was beginning to come out of the Great Depression, and gradually disposable income and consumer confidence were increasing. The company had done well for itself in the 1930s, especially considering that America was going through the worst economic decade in the country's history. And as the 1940s began, things looked even better for the king of American motorcycles. Their long history of high quality and constant innovation had won them a loyal following, and things had never looked better.

But that all changed on December 7, 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. America was plunged into World War II, and nothing would be the same for several years for Harley Davidson. They immediately cut way back on making motorcycles for the consumer market, and devoted nearly all their manufacturing efforts to supplying bikes for the war effort. One of the motorcycles produced for the war was the XA-750, which was a unique vehicle built for desert combat conditions. However, after conflict ceased in the North Africa theater, there was no longer any use for them, and so only a little over one thousand of these bikes were made. They went on to become one of the most sought after Harley Davidson items by collectors. The company also produced nearly 100,000 WLA bikes for the military.
